WalkMe is a walking assistant that keeps track of your performance while walking. It provides speed, distance, steps taken, and calories burned during exercise. After the walk the results can be exported and uploaded for further analysis to any walking community site.

Features

  • Real-time calories burned
  • Pedometer function (step counter)
  • Exercise duration
  • Speed and distance tracker
  • Display traveled route and compass
  • Pace in kcal per hour
  • Auto Pause (pauses and resumes the walk based on speed)
  • Supports Bluetooth GPS and built in GPS
  • Export route to GPX and Google KML

Installation

You need a phone with an internal GPS (for example Nokia 6110 Navigator), or a phone with Bluetooth activated and an external Bluetooth GPS receiver (for example Globalsat BT-359S). When the application starts you have to respond 'Yes' when asked to grant access to Bluetooth or the Location API, otherwise you won't be able to track your walking performance. On some phones you can change the permission for an application to 'never ask' or 'ask once' or similar.

The first time you start WalkMe and use a Bluetooth GPS, you are asked to search for the device. Make sure the GPS is turned on before you start the search and then select the GPS from the list of found devices. If you haven't paired the GPS with the phone, you are asked to enter a passcode (usually 0000 or 1234). You are also asked to enter your weight and step length to be able to calculate burned calories and steps taken.

Licensing

The trial version has a limit of 30 days and allows walks up to 30 minutes.
If you like it, you can buy the full version here.

Compatibility

WalkMe has been tested on many phones and will likely work on many others as long as they support MIDP 2.0/CLDC-1.1, Bluetooth API (JSR-82) and/or Location API (JSR-179). Please download the trial and see for yourself.

Note that Motorola phones considers the Location API and File Connection API (JSR-75) as restricted and not accessible for unsigned Java applications. Therefore you won't be able to export the walked route to the Google KML and GPX file format.
