Klondike Solitaire for larger screens based on Michael Pearce’s Solytare’s released source at http://www.geocities.com/michaelgpearce/.

This is the result of people asking how they can enlarge Solytare to work on their large-screen phones; the game still functions largely as it did in its original small-screen version. The following was improved over the original version:

• a severe memory leak fixed
• better responsiveness
• game no longer crashes while trying to put a card in the empty spaces between cards
• now saves the height of the cards
• no longer tries to guess the screen width, calculating widths instead (card height and spacing can be customized via the Display menu item)
• the best-fitting font on your phone is used automatically
• many minor improvements

A Few Words About Settings

If the game is not behaving as you expect, play around with options and display settings. Most likely, the fix is a simple option change.

A new option that might be confusing is Display=>Mouse Pointer. If you have no problems with the game, leave this at the default Fast option. If, however, your mouse pointer leaves white lines after itself, switch to No Trail. This will make it a little less responsive, but will solve the “erasable cards” problem.

If the topmost card in the bottom rows covers the card underneath it, change Display=>Visible Card Spacing setting to a higher number. It may take some experimenting before you find a perfect setting. The defaults are still set for small screens.

Help! Cards Are All The Same Color!

There is always a possibility of receiving a hand where all cards are black or all cards are red. Although that is a difficult hand to play, it is normal to be dealt cards of the same color. If you doubt that you will be able to play this hand, simply press Deal or Reset to receive a new hand. Hopefully, the new hand will contain a mix of reds and blacks. Otherwise, you may repeat the procedure until the hand looks satisfactory.

This games works really well on my phone! It`s easy to use, stable and has options to fit individual screen sizes. It also saves the state of the game when exiting. Really a well crafted piece of software (for my phone, at least).

Feels stable and smooth overall. My biggest complaint is that when porting Michael Pearce`s code, the new graphical card set doesnt put the number at the top of the card, so If you have the card spacing at a normal level, you cannot tell what the card is at the top of the stack, you have to look at the bottom card and count up. The original game was way easier to play, even on a smaller screen. If they added the symbol and number to the very top of each card graphic, this game would be the best cellphone solitaire.

This version doesn`t work well on my small screen, but I use Michael Pearce`s original Solytare from his homepage (had to modify the jad-file). I think moving of the cards could be made simpler. I have a similar handheld card game from Radica with a simpler user interface.

I`ve had the game on my phone for about a month now and I play it CONSTANTLY. I was never a big Solitaire fan, until now that is. I will say this, it`s not easy. You can be dealt hands that will not have a single card that you can play. The AI is tricky sometimes like that. I don`t think it`s a glitch, as the Microsoft version does the same thing. It`s just the randomness of the order of the cards being issued. The graphics show up just fine on my V551j and it plays really well. It also has intelligent doubleclicking, if you know what that is. I`d love to see an updated version of this game, maybe with sound (on/off selectable) and have the card backs offer different colors/pictures? Overall, I give it a 9.5 - keep up the great work! - Ronin
